What a tendon is

Tendon

A tendon is a tough cord of tissue that joins a muscle to a bone. When the muscle pulls, the tendon passes that force to the bone so the joint moves.

Tendons are found all over the body, such as the Achilles at the heel and the tendons of the shoulder.

This matters because tendons can become irritated, strained or torn with overuse or a sudden pull. That leads to pain and weakness when you move.

A tendon problem often improves with the right loading over time. Physiotherapy does not heal a full tear on its own, but it guides the tendon back to strength.

At home our physiotherapist uses graded exercise to load the tendon safely, easing pain and rebuilding capacity. When a tendon is fully ruptured and needs surgery, we support the recovery afterwards.
