What a ligament is
Ligament
A ligament is a strong band of tissue that joins one bone to another. It holds joints together and keeps them stable when you move.
When a ligament is stretched too far or torn, it is called a sprain. This often happens at the ankle, knee or wrist during a fall or twist.
This matters because a sprained or torn ligament can leave a joint painful, swollen and unsteady.
A mild sprain usually heals with time. Physiotherapy does not reconnect a fully torn ligament, but it helps a healing joint recover its strength and control.
At home our physiotherapist guides safe movement, exercises for the muscles around the joint, and balance work. This helps the joint feel steady again and lowers the chance of another injury. When a full tear needs surgery, we support the recovery after.
