Planning ahead

How many physio sessions will we need

It is one of the first questions families ask, and the honest answer depends on a few things.

There is no single fixed number

Families often want one clear number, and we understand why. The honest answer is that it depends on the person and the goal.

A short recovery after knee surgery is not the same as regaining strength after a stroke. Each body heals at its own pace.

What we can promise is a clear plan after the first assessment, and honest updates as things change.

What changes how many are needed

Several things shape the number. The starting condition, the type of surgery or illness, and the person’s general health all matter.

Age, other medical problems, and how much the caregiver can practise between visits also count. A family that follows the home exercises often needs fewer visits.

Motivation and consistency make a real difference over time.

How the plan is reviewed

We do not fix a long plan and stop looking at it. Progress is checked at each visit against the goals you set.

When the person is improving well and the caregiver is confident, visits can spread out or end. When progress stalls, we look at why and adjust.

The aim is for the family to need us less over time, not more.

How the visits change over time

In practice, the pattern often changes as recovery goes. Early on, visits may be closer together while the person and caregiver find their feet.

As strength and confidence grow, the gap between visits can widen. The caregiver takes on more of the routine, and we step in to check and adjust.

Towards the end, some families keep an occasional visit to review progress. Others feel ready to carry on alone with a clear plan.

We talk about this shape openly, so you are never guessing. You will know why a visit is close together or spread out.

The number is a conversation, not a fixed package handed to you on the first day.

Ask for an honest estimate

If you want a realistic idea of how many visits your family member might need, tell us about their condition and goals, and we will give you an honest picture after we assess.

Common questions

Can you tell us a number before the first visit?

Not reliably, and we would rather not guess. After the first assessment we can give an honest range and explain what would make it shorter or longer. That estimate is far more useful than a number picked before we have seen the person.

Do more sessions always mean better recovery?

No. Beyond a point, what matters is steady practice at home, not more visits. We would rather teach the caregiver well and step back than keep visiting for its own sake. Good home physiotherapy aims to make itself less needed.

What if we can only manage a few sessions?

Tell us your situation and we will plan around it. Even a small number of visits can teach the family a safe home routine and set clear goals. We focus the sessions on what matters most for that person.
