What osteoarthritis is

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is wear and tear in a joint. The smooth cushion at the ends of the bones thins over the years, so the joint can become stiff and sore.

It most often affects the knees, hips and hands. Common signs are pain with use, stiffness after rest, and a joint that feels tight in the morning.

This matters because it can slow walking, stairs and daily tasks, especially in older adults.

The worn cushion cannot be regrown, and physiotherapy cannot restore it. What it can do is reduce pain and keep the joint working through the right movement.

At home our physiotherapist builds the muscles around the joint, guides safe exercise, and advises on activity and aids. Stronger, well-used joints often feel better and stay more independent.
