What functional training is

Functional training

Functional training means practising the real tasks a person needs to do each day. Instead of only lifting weights, the person works on getting up, walking, dressing or climbing stairs.

The exercises are built around the goals that matter, such as reaching the bathroom safely or standing at the sink.

This matters because strength on its own does not always transfer to daily life. Practising the real task builds the exact skill and confidence needed.

Functional training is a core part of physiotherapy, not an add-on. It is how gains in the gym become useful at home.

At home our physiotherapist trains these tasks in the person’s own rooms, using their own furniture and doorways. This makes the practice realistic, so progress shows directly in everyday independence.
