Foot drop

Foot dragging or catching when you walk?

When the foot will not lift and catches as you walk, physiotherapy can retrain the movement.

What foot drop is

Foot drop is when the front of the foot will not lift properly, so the toes catch or the foot drags when you walk. To clear the ground, people often lift the knee high or swing the leg out.

It raises the risk of tripping and falling, and walking becomes tiring and less safe.

Foot drop comes from a problem with the nerves or muscles that lift the foot, and it can follow a stroke or a nerve issue. Because of this, the cause should be understood by a doctor.

What a physiotherapist works on

Our physiotherapist checks how the foot and leg move, how you walk, and how it affects your balance. We work as part of your care, alongside your doctor.

We train the muscles that lift the foot, stretch the calf so the ankle stays mobile, and retrain a safer walking pattern. Steady practice helps the leg relearn the movement.

Where helpful, a brace that holds the foot up can make walking safer while strength is built. We help you use it well and combine it with the exercises.

Walking more safely with foot drop

A brace, sometimes called an ankle foot orthosis, can stop the foot catching and lower the risk of a trip. A doctor or physiotherapist advises when one suits you.

Good, supportive shoes help, and clearing loose mats and clutter makes the home safer while the leg recovers.

We teach a walking method that keeps you steadier, and show the family safe ways to support practice. Balance and confidence grow with the right, guided work.

When to see a doctor first

Foot drop has an underlying cause, so a doctor should assess it. Get urgent help if it came on suddenly, or with other new weakness, numbness, or trouble speaking, as this can be a sign of a stroke.

See a doctor if it followed back pain, an injury, or is getting worse.

We work alongside the medical team and start retraining once the cause is understood. We are honest about what exercise can help with and what needs a doctor.

Common questions

Can physiotherapy fix foot drop?

It depends on the cause. Some foot drop improves well with retraining and time, while some needs a brace for safety, and results vary. Our physiotherapist works alongside your doctor, builds the movement carefully, and is honest about what is realistic for your case.

Do I need a brace, or just exercises?

It depends on how much the foot lifts and how safe your walking is. Many people use a brace for safety while exercises rebuild the movement. Our physiotherapist works with your doctor to judge what suits you, and combines the two where it helps.

Can you help at home?

Yes. Home visits suit foot drop well, because we retrain walking on your real floors and steps, where tripping happens. We work alongside your doctor and teach the family to help safely. Message us on WhatsApp and tell us what a doctor has found so far.
