Walking again after ankle surgery
Rebuilding balance, movement and safe walking at home after ankle surgery, guided by your surgeon's rules.
M. Thurairaj, MAHPC-registered physiotherapist reviewFollowing the weight-bearing rules
After ankle or foot surgery, the surgeon sets how much weight the leg may take, and when. Some people must keep all weight off at first, others may put part of it down.
These rules protect the healing bone or ligament. Putting weight down too early can set recovery back.
A physiotherapist works strictly within your stage, helping you move safely on crutches or a frame until the surgeon allows more.
We keep the rest of the leg and the whole body active where it is safe, so you do not lose overall strength while the ankle heals. Each visit adjusts to how the ankle is settling.
What a physiotherapist works on
Early work keeps the rest of the body strong while the ankle heals, and keeps the toes and leg moving where allowed.
As weight-bearing increases, the physiotherapist helps you relearn a smooth, even walking pattern. Balance often needs rebuilding, since the ankle senses the ground less well after surgery.
We also work on getting up and down safely, and moving around your own home with less fear of falling.
Managing swelling and stiffness
Swelling around the ankle is common after surgery and can make movement stiff. Keeping the foot raised when resting often helps, within your surgeon’s advice.
Gentle, allowed movement of the toes and ankle helps the swelling settle and keeps the joint from getting stiff.
A physiotherapist guides how much movement is right for your stage, so you neither push too hard nor sit still for too long.
Warning signs to check
Some signs need a doctor rather than more exercise. A calf that becomes hot, swollen and painful, or sudden shortness of breath, needs urgent medical review as it can signal a blood clot.
A wound that turns red, hot or leaks, or a fever, also needs review. So does pain that suddenly worsens or a foot that turns pale or cold.
We would rather pause and send you to the right care.
Ask about walking again
If someone at home is recovering from ankle surgery and unsure how much they should be moving, send us a short message about the operation and their weight-bearing stage, and we will explain how we would help.
Common questions
When can I start putting weight on my ankle?
Only when your surgeon says so. The timing depends on what was repaired and how it is healing. We follow the weight-bearing stage in your notes exactly, and we help you move safely on crutches or a frame until you are cleared for more.
Why is my balance so bad after ankle surgery?
After surgery the ankle senses the ground less well, and the leg muscles have often weakened. This makes balance feel unsteady. A physiotherapist helps retrain that sense of balance step by step, which usually improves with guided practice over time.
Is it normal for my ankle to still swell?
Some swelling is common for a while after ankle surgery, especially later in the day. Raising the foot when resting often helps. If the swelling suddenly worsens, or the calf becomes hot and painful, contact a doctor promptly to be safe.
