What TENS therapy is
TENS therapy
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It is a small device that sends mild electrical pulses through pads placed on the skin.
The gentle pulses can help ease some types of pain while the device is on. Many people feel a light tingling rather than discomfort.
This matters because it offers a drug-free way to help manage pain during daily activity or exercise.
TENS does not treat the cause of the pain, and its effect is usually temporary. It works best as one small part of a wider plan, not on its own.
At home our physiotherapist may use TENS alongside exercise and movement where it suits the person. We show how to use it safely, explain when it is not suitable, and keep the focus on rebuilding real function.
