What sciatica is
Sciatica
Sciatica is pain that travels down the leg because a nerve in the lower back is irritated or pressed. The sciatic nerve runs from the spine into each leg.
The pain can feel sharp, burning or like an electric line down the buttock and thigh. There may also be tingling or weakness.
This matters because it can make sitting, standing and walking uncomfortable and disturb normal routines.
Many cases settle over weeks as the nerve calms. Physiotherapy does not remove whatever is pressing the nerve, but it helps reduce the irritation and keep you moving.
At home our physiotherapist teaches gentle movement, positions that ease the leg pain, and exercises that support the lower back. If there is severe weakness or loss of bladder control, we advise a doctor without delay.
