Sit to stand, rising from a chair

Sit to stand

Sit to stand is the action of rising from sitting to standing. It sounds ordinary, but it is one of the most important movements a person makes each day.

This matters because getting off a chair, bed or toilet is needed dozens of times a day. When it becomes hard, a person can get stuck or fall, and independence slips away.

Our physiotherapist trains this move as an exercise in its own right. We work on leg strength and technique, set the chair at a safe height, and practise until standing up feels steady and safe. Repeating it at home turns it into a reliable daily skill.
