Weight bearing, putting weight through a limb
Weight bearing
Weight bearing means letting a limb carry some of the body’s weight, such as standing on a leg or leaning on an arm. After surgery, a doctor may set limits on how much is allowed.
This matters because weight bearing helps bones and muscles stay strong and teaches the body to trust the limb again. Too much too soon, though, can strain a healing part.
Our physiotherapist follows any limits the surgeon has set and builds weight bearing up gently. We guide the person to load the limb safely, using support until strength and confidence return. The plan grows as the limb becomes ready for more.
