Oedema, swelling from fluid

Oedema

Oedema is swelling that happens when fluid gathers in the tissues, most often in the feet, ankles or hands. The skin can look puffy and feel tight.

This matters because a swollen limb is harder to move, and the skin over it is more likely to break down. Swelling that sits still for long can also feel heavy and uncomfortable.

Our physiotherapist uses gentle movement, raising the limb, and careful exercise to help fluid drain. We show the caregiver simple ways to position and move the limb so swelling does not build up between visits. If swelling suddenly worsens, we advise a doctor’s review.
