Gait belt, a belt to steady someone

Gait belt

A gait belt is a strong belt fastened around the waist so a helper has something safe to hold. It gives a firm grip when a person stands, transfers or walks.

This matters because grabbing an arm or clothing is not safe if the person stumbles. A belt lets the caregiver guide and steady without hurting the patient or their own back.

Our physiotherapist shows the caregiver how to fit the belt and hold it correctly. We practise standing and walking with it so both the patient and the helper feel secure. Used well, it turns a risky moment into a safe, controlled one.
