Gait training, relearning to walk
Gait training
Gait training is guided practice to help a person walk again safely. It is used after a stroke, a fall, or surgery when walking has become weak or unsteady.
This matters because walking is tied to independence. Getting to the bathroom or the kitchen alone changes daily life for the whole family. It also lifts a person’s confidence and mood.
Our physiotherapist breaks walking into smaller parts, such as standing, shifting weight and stepping. We practise in the person’s own home, add a walking aid if needed, and build up distance at a safe pace. The caregiver learns how to support each step.
