Commode

A commode is a movable chair with a toilet seat and a container underneath. It lets a person use the toilet near their bed or chair when reaching the bathroom is hard.

Some commodes can also be wheeled over a normal toilet or used beside the bed at night.

This matters because getting to the bathroom is a common time for falls, especially at night or soon after surgery.

A commode is a helpful aid, not a treatment. It keeps toileting safe and dignified while the person is regaining strength.

At home our physiotherapist advises on placing the commode safely, and practises the transfers on and off it. As the person gets stronger and steadier, we work towards reaching the bathroom again where that goal is realistic.
