What a walking stick does
Walking stick
A walking stick, or single-point cane, is a simple aid that gives extra support on one side while walking. It adds a point of contact with the ground to help balance.
It is often used by people who feel a little unsteady, or who have pain or weakness on one leg.
This matters because a stick set to the right height and used correctly can make walking safer and less tiring.
A walking stick helps, but the wrong height or the wrong hand can make it less useful or even risky. Set-up matters.
At home our physiotherapist checks the height, teaches which hand to use and how to walk with it, and works on strength and balance. The aim is steadier walking now, and less reliance on the stick as the person improves.
