What step length means
Step length
Step length is the distance covered by one step, from the heel of one foot to the heel of the other. It is one simple sign of how well someone is walking.
When steps become short and shuffling, walking slows and can feel less steady. This can happen with age, after a stroke, or with conditions like Parkinson’s.
This matters because short, uneven steps are linked to a higher risk of trips and falls.
Step length is something physiotherapy can often improve with the right practice. It is a useful goal because small gains show up in daily walking.
At home our physiotherapist works on strength, balance and walking technique to help lengthen the step safely. We use practice and simple cues, so walking becomes smoother, steadier and more confident over time.
