What a splint is

Splint

A splint is a support that holds a joint or limb in a set position. It can be made of plastic, fabric or other firm material, and is worn on the outside of the body.

Splints are used to rest an injured part, protect a healing area, or keep a joint from tightening into a poor position.

This matters because the right position at the right time protects the joint and helps recovery.

A splint on its own does not restore movement or strength. Worn too long without exercise, a joint can become stiff.

At home our physiotherapist advises on when to wear the splint and when to move, and works on the joint’s movement and strength. We watch the skin and adjust the plan, so the splint protects the area while function is rebuilt.
