Pressure relief mattress

A pressure relief mattress is a special mattress that lowers the risk of pressure sores. It spreads the body’s weight more evenly, and some types gently change the pressure over time.

It is used for a person who cannot move much in bed and stays in one position for long periods.

This matters because constant pressure on the skin can cause painful sores that are slow to heal.

The mattress helps, but it does not remove the need to move and change position. It works best together with regular repositioning.

At home our physiotherapist encourages movement and safe position changes, and teaches the caregiver a turning routine. We help the person do whatever active movement they can, so the skin, the joints and the muscles all stay protected.
