What Parkinson's disease is

Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is a long-term condition that affects movement. It develops as certain brain cells that help control movement slowly reduce.

Common signs are shaking at rest, stiff muscles, slow movement and problems with balance. Steps can become small and shuffling, and turning can feel unsteady.

This matters because these changes build up over years and affect walking, dressing and daily safety.

The condition cannot be undone, and physiotherapy cannot stop it from advancing. What it can do is help the person move better and stay active for longer.

At home our physiotherapist works on bigger steps, better balance, and safe ways to turn and stand. We use cues and practice to keep walking smooth, reduce fall risk, and help the person stay independent as the condition changes.
