Non weight bearing, keeping weight off

Non weight bearing

Non weight bearing is a doctor’s instruction to keep all weight off a leg or foot. The limb must not touch the floor while standing or walking, so the bone or repair can heal undisturbed.

This matters after some fractures and surgeries, where even a little weight too soon can slow healing or undo a repair. Following the order closely protects the result.

Our physiotherapist teaches safe ways to move while the leg stays off the ground, using crutches or a frame. We practise standing, hopping short distances, transfers and toilet trips at home, and we keep the person safe until the doctor allows weight through the leg again.
