What lymphoedema is
Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is swelling that happens when fluid builds up in the tissues, usually in an arm or leg. It occurs when the body’s drainage system for this fluid is damaged or overloaded.
It can follow surgery, cancer treatment or long-standing problems with circulation. The limb may feel heavy, tight and swollen.
This matters because ongoing swelling can limit movement, cause discomfort and raise the risk of skin infection.
Lymphoedema cannot be fully undone, but it can be managed well over the long term. Physiotherapy is one part of that care.
At home our physiotherapist uses gentle exercise, movement and positioning to help the fluid move, and guides skin care and daily habits. We also teach the person and family simple ways to keep the swelling under control between visits.
