What cerebral palsy is

Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition that affects movement and posture. It comes from a problem in the developing brain, usually before or around birth.

It can cause stiff or floppy muscles, poor balance and difficulty with movements like sitting, standing or walking. Each person is affected differently.

This matters because the movement challenges are present from early life and shape daily activity as the child grows.

Cerebral palsy cannot be reversed, and physiotherapy does not change the brain difference. What it can do is help the person move as well and as comfortably as possible.

At home our physiotherapist works on strength, flexibility, positioning and useful daily skills, and supports the use of braces or aids. We guide the family so progress continues between visits and function is protected over time.
