Ataxia, unsteady and uncoordinated movement

Ataxia

Ataxia means movement that is unsteady and poorly coordinated. Walking may look wide and wavering, the hands may miss when reaching, and speech can sound uneven. It comes from a problem in the parts of the nervous system that control coordination.

This matters because unsteady movement raises the risk of falls and makes precise tasks, like eating or dressing, harder.

Physiotherapy works alongside the medical care for the cause. Our physiotherapist trains balance, coordination and steadier walking, often using support and repeated practice. We set up the home to lower fall risk and teach exercises that help the person move with more control and confidence.
