Amputation and prosthetic gait

Amputation and prosthetic gait

An amputation is the surgical removal of part of a limb, often a leg, sometimes because of diabetes or injury. A prosthetic limb is an artificial replacement that can restore movement.

Prosthetic gait means learning to walk again using the prosthesis. This takes time, strength and practice, because balance and movement feel different at first.

This matters because good walking with a prosthesis protects the other leg, prevents falls and restores independence.

Physiotherapy does not fit the prosthesis, which is the work of a prosthetist. What it does is prepare the body and teach safe, confident walking.

At home our physiotherapist strengthens the limb, cares for the remaining leg, and builds balance and walking step by step. We progress from standing to walking with aids, at a pace that keeps the person safe.
