What a stroke is
Stroke
A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Brain cells in that area stop getting oxygen and are hurt within minutes.
Because different parts of the brain control different things, the effects vary. Common ones are weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, and loss of balance.
This matters because a stroke is a medical emergency. Fast hospital care in the first hours protects as much of the brain as possible.
After the person is stable and home, physiotherapy helps the body relearn movement. At home our physiotherapist works on standing, walking and using the weaker arm, in the rooms the person uses daily. We also teach the family safe ways to help.
Physiotherapy cannot undo the brain damage itself. What it can do is build back function, strength and confidence over time.
