What a mini stroke is

Mini stroke (TIA)

A mini stroke, or transient ischaemic attack, causes stroke-like symptoms that pass within a short time. The blood supply to part of the brain is briefly interrupted, then returns.

Signs can include sudden weakness, slurred speech or a drooping face that fades within minutes or hours.

This matters greatly because a mini stroke is a warning sign. It can come before a full stroke, so the person needs a doctor’s review quickly even after the symptoms pass.

A physiotherapist does not treat the mini stroke itself, which is a medical matter. What we can help with afterwards is safe movement and fall prevention if the person has become unsteady or fearful.

At home we work on balance, strength and confident walking, so daily life feels secure again while the doctor manages the underlying cause.
