Gait, the way a person walks

Gait

Gait is the pattern of how a person walks. It covers the length of each step, the rhythm, and how weight moves from one leg to the other.

We watch gait because a change often shows a problem early. After a stroke or a fall, an uneven or unsteady walk can raise the risk of another fall. A caregiver who knows what to watch can flag trouble sooner.

Our physiotherapist studies how the person walks at home, then works on the parts that are weak or unsafe. Small corrections can make walking steadier and less tiring, and we practise in the person’s own rooms.
