Dementia and mobility

Dementia is a loss of memory and thinking that gets worse over time. As well as memory, it can change how a person moves and stays safe on their feet.

Someone with dementia may forget to use a walking stick, misjudge steps, or become unsteady and restless. This raises the risk of falls.

This matters because a fall can cause serious injury and take away independence quickly.

Physiotherapy cannot treat the dementia itself, which is a medical condition. What it can do is support safer movement in a way that fits the person’s understanding.

At home our physiotherapist works on strength and balance, uses simple repeated routines, and helps make the home safer. We guide caregivers on how to help walking calmly and consistently, so daily movement stays as safe as possible.
