Breathing exercise, for the lungs and chest
Breathing exercise
Breathing exercises are guided ways of breathing that help the lungs fill more fully, ease breathlessness, or loosen and clear mucus from the chest.
This matters for people with lung conditions, after a chest infection, or when someone is bedridden and cannot cough well. Air that reaches the whole lung and a chest that clears help lower the risk of infection.
Our physiotherapist teaches techniques such as slow deep breaths, controlled breathing to settle breathlessness, and huffing to bring up phlegm. We match the exercises to the person’s condition, and show the caregiver how to help with them each day so the chest stays clearer between visits.
