Home vs hospital

Stroke rehab at home or in hospital?

After a stroke, families often weigh whether to continue rehabilitation at home or keep travelling to a hospital.

What each setting suits

Hospital based rehabilitation has staff, equipment and other specialists in one place. It suits the early period, complex cases, and people who still need close medical oversight.

Home physiotherapy suits people for whom travel is hard, and where practising in the real home makes recovery safer and more useful.

Neither is simply better. The right choice depends on the person, the stage of recovery, and what the family can manage.

Where they overlap

The two are not rivals. Many families use hospital rehabilitation first, then move to home physiotherapy once the person is stable and discharged.

Good care keeps the doctor in the picture. If a home plan reveals a new problem, we point back to the hospital rather than pressing on.

The goal is one steady thread of recovery, not a choice between two camps.

How to choose

Start with the person’s needs. If travel causes pain or risk, or a clinic wait exhausts them, home physiotherapy removes that barrier and lets practice fit daily life.

If the person needs heavy equipment, close medical monitoring, or several specialists together, hospital based care may serve them better.

We are glad to talk it through honestly and say when the hospital route is the wiser first step.

Questions worth asking yourself

A few simple questions can make the choice clearer. Is travel painful or risky for the person right now? Does a clinic wait leave them exhausted?

Does the person still need close medical monitoring, or are they medically stable? What is the family able to manage day to day?

There is no single right answer, and the answer can change as recovery moves on. Tell us where things stand, and we will help you weigh it honestly.

The right setting is not fixed forever, and it can shift as recovery moves on. We are happy to revisit the choice with you at any stage.

Common questions

Is home rehabilitation as good as hospital rehabilitation?

For many stroke goals, home work is effective because the practice matches daily life. For complex cases or heavy equipment, a hospital adds value. The best setting depends on the person and the stage, and we will tell you honestly which fits.

Can we do both?

Often yes. Many families use hospital rehabilitation early, then home physiotherapy after discharge, with the doctor still reviewing progress. We keep our plan in step with the medical team rather than replacing them.

How do we decide what our parent needs?

Look at travel, safety, and what the person is working towards. If getting to a clinic is the hardest part of the day, home care helps. If close medical oversight is needed, hospital care comes first. Tell us the situation and we will advise plainly.
